Let me just preface this by saying this was not my idea. I rarely have an original thought, and the credit for this gem goes to Lindsay from www.aubreyandlindsay.blogspot.com. She had the brilliant idea to use timbits to make cake pops instead of going through the entire process of baking the cake, crumbling the cake, adding the icing, rolling the cake balls, chilling the cake balls, etc. You get the idea.
Brilliant!
How hard could this be?? After reading her post I headed right out to the bulk barn to pick up the coloured chocolate coating. As I mentioned before, any sane person would try a colour or two, I bought seven. And because I had no idea how much to buy of each colour, I have a tonne of left over.
Timbits were next on the list (10 old fashion, and 30 chocolate glazed), and I was off to the races.
I watched a few how to videos for quick tips on making cake pops and they all said to pre dip the lollipop sticks in a bit of chocolate to secure the stick before dipping. Done. Chill for 15 mins. Done.
Next up was melting the chocolate.
Getting the right temp from my 15 year old microwave was tricky but once I was on my 5th colour I got the hang of it.
I lost a few while dipping, I'm not going to lie. But all in all, the day was a success.
I ended up with approximately 36 very cute colourful cake pops for my co-workers to enjoy.
Just a few tips before you try this at home:
1. Only use 1 or 2 colours of chocolate coating, not 7
2. Do 20 pops, not 40 your first go
3. Don't use a 15 year old microwave to melt the chocolate
4. Hire kitchen help to clean up after you:) It gets messy!
5. Get ready to be complimented over and over, these babies are a hit!
Enjoy.
